White Christmas at Gatorland

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Gatorland is pleased to announce the return of the giant white alligators to the White Gator Swamp on November 19, 2009.

The four ivory colored reptiles were temporarily removed from the exhibit while initial breeding introductions were conducted. Alligators are very territorial, and the introduction of a new animal into the environment can be a very tedious process; especially if it is a good-lookin’ female with 82-razor sharp teeth!

After a successful introduction, a normally solitary alligator will become more social as the weather warms in early spring.  Alligator courtship begins in early April and climaxes in mid May through the beginning of June.  Most of the actual mating occurs in April and May, and the female alligator will lay eggs in June. Approximately 65 to 68 days later, hatchling alligators will emerge from the eggs.

The White Gator Swamp offers guests the opportunity to view these amazing reptiles from just a few feet away.  The swamp themed exhibit features rustic cypress walkways, glass viewing and softly lit enclosures that help to protect the massive reptiles from direct sunlight while highlighting the unique features of the alligators.
